The village wraps a lake with no public access, and nearly every home on it is owner-occupied. Driveway plowing here is a Lake Country job: long, hilly, and often reached by a road no municipal plow is coming down.

Oconomowoc Lake is the village and the water. A local brokerage puts the lake at 822 acres and describes it as “entirely private with no public access,” and the village that rings it is 669 people on the ACS estimate, in roughly 312 housing units. Of the occupied homes, 97.9% are owner-occupied — the highest share of any village in the county’s tenure table and a point above Merton village. The Census income estimate here is top-coded, which means the figure is a ceiling the survey does not report above; this page says only that household income is among the highest in the state, and it publishes no home-value figure, because the margin on one this small is not a number.
The year-built table is a direction rather than a fact at this size — a 1979 median with a nine-year margin — but its shape is readable: a quarter of the stock from before 1950, another quarter from 1950–79, and about 28% from 2000 on, with 14% since 2010. Old shore houses, mid-century ones, and a steady run of rebuilds. Every one of them sits at the end of a drive that runs from the road down to the water.
The DNR’s account of the Kettle Moraine is the geology under this shoreline: ice lobes up to two miles thick collided here and left moraines, drumlins, kames and eskers. The lakes are the kettles. A shoreline driveway on that ground drops from the road, turns, and often ends in a turnaround by the garage or a lower door. A plow that clears it needs room to push and somewhere to put what it pushed, and on a lake lot the wrong somewhere is the bank.
The county’s comprehensive plan named the Oconomowoc lakes among the unsewered parts of Lake Country in 2000. A drainfield takes no snow pile.

The nearest NOAA normals station is Oconomowoc itself: 39.5 inches a season on the 1991–2020 record, 13.2 days with an inch or more, 4.2 with three or more. Waukesha, the county’s reference station, is the same 39.5 inches with 13.6 and 4.7. A 1-inch seasonal contract on this lake is therefore paying for thirteen or so visits in a normal year, and a 3-inch one for four.
Total inches are a poor guide to the plow count. In the Groundhog Day blizzard of 2011, the NWS put 12.6 inches on Oconomowoc across three days while Racine took 23.5 — that storm ran off the lake. On March 9–10, 2023, a point two miles north of Oconomowoc measured 6.1 inches while New Berlin measured 10.0. Storms here land on the light side of the county in easterly weather and on the heavy side in westerly weather, and a contract priced per visit does not care which. The Milwaukee Mitchell normal is 48.7 inches and its plowable-day count, 13.4, is within a fraction of Oconomowoc’s.
For a per-visit yardstick, one operator serving the City of Waukesha publishes $49 a visit at a 1–2 inch trigger, asphalt only, next day. That is a town driveway in the county seat; an Oconomowoc Lake drive is a different job and the quote will be a multiple of it. What the figure does is set the floor: 13.2 visits at that price is about $650 before salt, and a seasonal number here is judged against that. The seasonal-versus-per-visit arithmetic.
Every driveway on this shore drains to the lake. SEWRPC’s regional chloride study puts winter maintenance, public and private, at roughly 59 percent of the region’s annual chloride load, and the Freeman’s December 2025 reporting on that work found the Oconomowoc River below Lac La Belle at times approaching the state’s 395 mg/L chronic standard. The DNR’s driveway rule is a 12-ounce mug of salt for a 20-foot driveway. A shoreline drive several times that length does not need several mugs; it needs a plow that clears to pavement and an operator who knows salt stops working at 15°F and switches to a blend or sand below it. Length of the run from road to garage. Grade, and whether the drive has a turn that needs backing. Whether the road in is private and, if so, whether the operator takes it as part of the job. A walk to the lake door and steps to the water, if they are to be kept open. The trigger depth, one inch or three. And the return pass: whether the operator comes back after a road plow — municipal or the association’s — leaves a ridge across the apron. The last is the one to get in writing; none of the county’s public bodies says the apron ridge is the homeowner’s, and all of them leave it there.
