Genesee is a town of 7,235 people with no village center of its own. In Wisconsin a town plows its own roads; the county truck handles the lettered county highways through it and, under WisDOT contract, the numbered state routes. So the plow that opens the road in front of a Genesee house is the town’s, the one on a lettered county highway or a numbered state route is the county’s, and if the house is on a private subdivision road, it is nobody’s until the owners hire one. The town’s numbers are the western county’s. Median household income is $118,578, the median home is $437,500, and 90.3% of occupied homes are owner-occupied — fourteen points above the county’s 76.0% and thirty above the Milwaukee–Waukesha metro’s 60.4%. Nine in ten Genesee households are the household that signs a seasonal contract.
No Genesee snow ordinance was located for this page. Sidewalk duties, overnight parking hours and the snow-in-the-road rule in the town are the town’s to set, and none is quoted here. A town of this kind has few public sidewalks in any case. What binds regardless is state law: Wis. Stat. § 346.94(5) forbids placing on a highway “any foreign substance which is or may be injurious to any vehicle,” and § 86.022 makes a willful obstruction of a public highway a misdemeanor. Snow pushed from a driveway across a town road is both.
The nearest published rules are the Village of Wales’s: 24 hours for a sidewalk, cost plus 15% if the village clears it, no parking 2 to 7 a.m. under § 419-7A. They are Wales’s rules, not Genesee’s, and are given here as the neighbor’s range only.
The county’s housing study puts the 2018–2022 average lot at 0.67 acres, and a town like Genesee is where that average comes from. The year-built table shows 2,968 units on a 1981 median — the county’s own median year — with 39.5% built 1950–79 and a nearly equal 38.3% built 1980–99. Two generations of subdivision on former farmland, each with a driveway sized for a lot measured in acres rather than feet.
By the 2005 county figure, about 38% of county residents drew from private wells, and the unsewered west is where most of them are. A drainfield takes no pile; a well head takes no blade. Mark them for the operator in the fall.
The DNR’s Kettle Moraine runs through the western county: moraines, drumlins, kames and eskers. Genesee’s drives climb and turn, and a plow on a grade needs a place to stack at the bottom.
Genesee has no snowfall station of its own and no storm in the NWS archive names it. The measurements that bracket it are Waukesha’s: 8.2 inches on March 9–10, 2023, with 9.6 two miles southeast of Eagle to the southwest, and 16.0 inches at a point four miles south of Waukesha on February 5–6, 2008, when Milwaukee measured 11.6. Westerly storms tend to land heavier on this side of the county than at the lake, and easterly ones lighter.
The count is what a contract buys. On Waukesha’s NOAA 1991–2020 normals, 13.6 days a season bring an inch or more and 4.7 bring three or more; the Dousman station on the county’s west line, the heaviest normals in the county at 53.3 inches, counts 15.4 and 5.0. The one published per-visit price in the county is $49 from a City of Waukesha operator serving that city only, asphalt only, next day — a floor. Fourteen visits at that price is about $670 before salt, and a Genesee quote on a longer drive is measured against it. All the published numbers.
